These days, the modern equine, has to face many challenges that affects its lungs and its associated performance. During winter months, longer stabling hours mean that fungal spores and airborne irritants are prevalent in abundance in hay, bedding and also on riding surfaces, whilst the spring and summer can bring high pollen counts, as well as the introduction of chemicals from industrial spraying, which can also be antagonistic.
Horses that react to these symptoms upon inhalation can irritate the delicate lung tissue and this is what creates a cough reflex. For any ridden horse you need to ensure that it does not suffer from any blocked passages and where possible increase lung capacity to allow more oxygen to be delivered into the blood. This increasing supply of oxygen allows the muscles to work harder and much longer for optimum performance.
